For the next installment of “A Moment With” we spoke with D-Styles. His involvement with the seminal music collectives Invisibl Skratch Piklz + The Beat Junkies progressed DJ culture in the 90s + 00s, and he continues to pave the way for Turntablist / Beat heads as a resident of the long-running “Low End Theory” event based in Los Angeles.
We the Beat Junkies are always looking for new ways to make music as well appreciating new techniques and this is something we think you should check out if you want expand on your repetoire. Ladies & Gentleman…..Beat Discovery!
“If you make beats, then you’ve probably sifted through hundreds of sounds, loading them individually, only to program the same pattern you’ve made a thousand times. It’s extremely tedious, and can take the fun out of making a beat. Beat Discovery is the first drum sequencer of it’s kind, and was designed to solve this problem. It makes programming sounds fun, creative, and super easy. It’s easy for beginners & made for and by professionals.
Beat Discovery was conceived and designed by RUCKAZOIDand programmed with love by Leo Olivers of Mucoder.
The idea was to merge the ease of analog drum machines together with the digital world of unlimited sounds. After the initial user interface was designed, they both partnered up to bring something new to the world of electronic music.”
Check out Ruckazoid & Teeko make 15 beats in 20 minutes!

Our good friend Dj Eclipse of Non-Phixion/Rap Is Outta Control just released this vintage footage of Mos Def & Talib Kweli from the Fat Beats LA 1 Year Anniversary party at the old Crush Bar in Hollywood. Eclipse worked at the flash ship in New York, while Babu, J.Rocc & Rhettmatic worked at the LA store. This footage shows the 1st time that Mos & Kweli performed in LA. This is an early manifestation of Black Star. You can see J.Rocc spinning for Mos & Kweli…this is also how J became Black Star‘s official DJ. If you look closely, you can see a young Mr. Choc, Melo-D, Dj Nu-Mark, J.Rocc, Babu, & Rhettmatic…lol. The Beat Junkies & Invisibl Skratch Piklz also performed that night. We can’t wait when Eclipse drops that footage. Until then, enjoy this piece of Hip Hop history! Shoutouts to Dj Jab, the owner of Fat Beats!

Bigups to our big brother Dj Jazzy Jeff for having our very own Rhettmatic & Melo-D featured in his new episode of “Vinyl Destination”:
“Shenanigans at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles leads DJ Jazzy Jeff to the Beyond Wonderland Music Festival in San Bernardino. Along with Z-Trip and the Beat Junkies the collective shut down the festival at the end of the night. This sentimental performance marks the end of an era for DJ Jazzy Jeff as he embarks on a new vision for the future.
After a week of the new change, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the crew hit the road to Portland. In route to the show they run into an issue with transportation. After some negotiating, they are on the their way to test out DJ Jazzy Jeff’s new DJ super hero super powers, along with comedian JB”

Yes….the stars have been aligned!!! It’s the return of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz! The Grandmixer himself, Dj Q-Bert, along with our very own D-Styles & Shortkut are part of legendary DJ dynasty who’s roster that also includes the incredible Mixmaster Mike, the talented Dj Apollo, Dj A-Trak, just to name a few. Peep out the video below and the rest of the documentary here: http://www.redbullthre3style.com/article/return-invisibl-skratch-piklz
“DJ LEGENDS! The Invisibl Skratch Pikilz have reformed after a twenty year hiatus to record a new album and perform at the Red Bull Thre3style world finals in Tokyo, Japan.
Regarded as music’s most influential turntablist crews, the trio behind ISP – QBert, Shortkut and D-Styles – are respected members of the extended Thre3style family, having performed and judged at events across the world.
To create the new record, the group set up shop at Red Bull Studios in Tokyo in spring this year, where they crafted the LP over the course of a week.
Fans will get to see the ISPs perform the album (and probably some old favourites) when they perform at the Thre3style grand final on September at Tokyo’s Sound and Vision museum.
For the first time ever, the event will be live streamed via redbullthre3style.com bringing the energy of the competition in to people’s homes.
Shortkut, D-Styles and Q-Bert also star in an awesome web series the Japanese team have worked on which shows them hard at work on their first LP in two decades.”
The Beat Junkies video series “Watch The Sound” returns, spotlighting on Djs/Turntablists that we like and letting them get busy. This episode, we feature Redbull 3x LA Thre3style Champion, Dj Dynamix of the IF2 crew. Watch him get down as he chops up the Rasco classic song “The Unassited”. You can follow Dynamix on Twitter and IG: @dynamixif2

We are back with another installment of our “Watch The Sound” video series. This time, we decided to do a little something different & spotlight some talented individuals outside of The Beat Junkies. This particular episode features the DMC World Supremacy Champion IFTW (Image From The Wood) For more info on IFTW, follow him on IG and Twitter at @djiftw. For all things Beat Junkies, visit us at www.beatjunkies.com
It’s been a while since we did a “Watch The Sound” video but we’re back with another episode. This new video features our very own Dj Shortkut, as he reflips a classic Mantronix record. This is a beat juggling/scratch routine that Short rarely does…..if you’re able to catch him on some of his live shows doing this, you’re lucky. Now we’re able to bring it to you. Enjoy!
February is what we like to call “Dilla Month” in honor of the birthday & death anniversary of the one of the greatest (if not THEE greatest) music producer of all time….the one & only James Dewitt Yancey, better known to the world as the legendary J-Dilla. He was born in Detroit on February 7th, 1973 and passed away in Los Angeles on February 10th, 2006 due to complications to Lupus, a few days after his 33rd birthday & the release of his final opus, “Donuts”.
J.Rocc & Rhettmatic both have a special bond with Dilla. J was part of the circle of close friends when Dilla moved to Los Angeles, that included Madlib, Peanut Butter Wolf, & Egon. J.Rocc is also the 3rd member of Jaylib, the collabo group of J-Dilla & Madlib. Rhettmatic eventually also became a part of Dilla’s LA’s circle of friends. Dilla personally asked Rhett to be his tour DJ for his European Tour (which actually turned out to be Dilla’s last tour ever) when J wasn’t available.
Both J & Rhett have done personal tribute mixes to their fallen friend over the years, but haven’t recently done one in a while….till now. This time, they decided to make another Dilla Tribute Mix….together. They basically planned to record an impromptu, inprovised 2×4 (2 person/4 turntables) mix…nothing pre-planned, video archive the live session, see what happens, pick the best part of the mix, & release it to the world to share.
This particular video footage was all recorded in one night with 2 separate GoPro cameras just to document the impromptu recording session between J & Rhett, as they improvise on the spot, weaving in & out of songs with blends & cuts. This is a visual preview of the free mix “Get Live With It”, that will be sharing with the world on February 10th, 2015.
This Audio/Visual Recording is dedicated to the loving memory of James Dewitt Yancey aka Jay Dee aka J-Dilla….We miss you.
Our very own Dj BabutheDilated Junkie did a special mix in a video format for legendary cratedigger/producer Julian from Recordkingz.com. Watch/Hear this dope mix!
“This video is a result of what happens when Juliano fromRECORDKINGZ.COM gives 100s of rare sample, break, reggae, library, Bollywood, should and funk tunes to DJ BABU from THE BEAT JUNKIES and DILATED PEOPLES to select some crazy music for a special mix and mash up exclusive from Record Kingz.”
New visuals from the Axel F crew (J.Rocc & M.E.D.)…..This was shot in Japan last year while MED was on tour with Blu. “Theme Music” is out right now; you can pick it up on ITunes or get the CD/Vinyl at www.bangyahead.com or www.stonesthrow.com
After winning the San Francisco RedBull Thre3style Championship in 2014, the Triple Threat DJs (the legendary Dj Apollo, the talented Dj Vinroc, & our very own Shortkut) took a trip out to NY a few months back to visit Scratch Dj Academy in Manhattan.
“In addition to demonstrating their epic skills, the guys discussed how they got their start. These guys truly have done it all. From beginning with family weddings, birthday parties, and school dances to the epic presence they have today.”
Bootie Brown of The Pharcyde has a new website called Lablife Pros (www.lablifepro.com) where they interview different music producers in the game. Their featured artist/producer spotlight is none other than our very own Dj Rhettmatic. Learn more about Rhett’s history as a producer, what products he uses, working with The Beat Junkies and much more….peep the interview.
What’s up peoples….It’s been hard to keep with things when the holidays hit. I’ve been playing catch up as of late.
Anyways, here’s another installment of Throwback Thursdays. Today, I’m featuring my Beat Junkie brother, the one & only Dj Melo-D. Melo is definitely one of the bests to do it and sometimes very underrated compared to all our contempories out there. He’s always flawless with the cuts, scratches, beat juggles, & mixes….very precise yet funky. Maybe I’m just biased cause he’s in my crew….LOL!
Peep his solo scratch performance off the Turntable Wizardry 2 video (it was on VHS) that came out in 97. Crazy!
What’s up folks….I’m back with another installment of “Throwback Thursdays”.
Today’s installment is the official video of J.Rocc‘s single “Stay Fresh”, off his solo debut album “Some Cold Rock Stuf” on Stones Throw Records. This video was shot by Mayer Hawthorne while him, J, & Peanut Butter Wolf were touring Japan (a few months after the 2011 Japan Earthquake & Tsunami). Special cameo by the King Of Diggin, Dj Muro.
The Funky President has been busy in the lab cooking up some goodies. Stay tuned for the Axel F album with M.E.D. in November as well as a special Beat Tape coming out on Stones Throw at the end of the year…..
But for the meantime, enjoy the throwback video (from a few years ago….)
The hermano, 5x World Champion legend, Dj Craze put up a Youtube video yesterday of his latest Dj routine using Kanye West‘s “New Slaves”. In this footage, Craze shows a perfect balance of using both traditional Dj skills & embracing new technology at the same time….this video shows that Craze still has the skills to pay the bills while able to be “current” in today’s Dj climate.
And from his own words: “This culture means the world to me and has blessed me with so much. I’m a b-boy at heart and this is my form of expression. I hope y’all paid attention to the message instead of the shots I fired! This is an artform that I feel doesn’t get the respect it deserves but as long as I’m breathing, I will do my best to bring you that heat!!! #realdjing”
Salute to our good friend Craze for always coming with it!
What’s up folks…..yes, another installment of “Throwback Thursdays”.
For those that do not know, Shortkut & myself call ourselves “The Godfathers”, not because we’re like ‘Godfathers’ in the DJ/Turntablist scene, but because we are actual Godfathers (or as the Filipinos would traditionally say, “Ninongs”) to Babu‘s oldest son, Niko….and we were also roommates at one time….LOL!!
Back in the early 2000’s, Short & myself came up with some 2 man tag-team routines while we were roommates. We eventually took our little set on the road while on tour with The Visionaries in Europe. Fast forward to 2013, our sponsors Rane asked the Junkies to perform at their booth for the NAMM Show. Short & myself took the opportunity to try to come up with some stuff that’s similar to what we did back in the 2000’s. A couple of things tho that was standing in our way. (1) We forgot some of our old routines, (2) Short lives in the Bay Area, I live in the LA County, & (3) because of our busy schedules, we only had 1 day, yes…ONE DAY, to come up with something. So Short flew down to LA the day before we were schedule to play at the NAMM booth, so we can practice and try to come up with something. We rented out a rehearsal studio, came up with something, & practice for 6 hours. We were able to remember & incorporate some of our old 2 man routine, and with Short’s suggestion, we reflip a classic routine of The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel. After brainstorming & stressing, this is what we came up with.
Short & myself have always talked about doing a Godfather show, hopefully we can still do one in the near future. Hope you like this little ditty from 2 years ago….oh yeah, peep the other footage below of our original 2 man tag-team routine, back in the early 2000’s when we were using vinyl, 2 Vestax mixers, & 3 Vestax turntables….ah yes, memories….LOL!
From The Visionaries European Tour (2004) in Hamburg, Germany
What’s up folks…..yup, you guessed it, I got another video for Throwback Thursdays. This particular video is a little different from the previous vintage Dj Battle footages.
This is from the 2007 Redbull Big Tune Producers Battle – LA Finals taken place at the old Knitting Factory in Hollywood (If you know the history, this is the spot where we used to throw our classic “Nightlife”events at). For the most part, everyone knows that the Junkies are known for our Dj skills & our Battle Dj background, but not everyone knows that we are also producers and have been making beats & doing productions for quite a few Hip Hop artists. This particular footage combines the best of both worlds…..battles & beats! The concept of the Big Tune Battle is to pit Producers against each other in a head to head elimination competition showcasing their beats/production and the winner of each round to be determined by crowd response & participation. The competition was developed by producers Jake One, Vitamin D, & Music Industry vet Jonathan Moore.
What was cool about this particular competition, it featured new upcoming producers as well as the veteran producers to come with their “A” game, because it shows no matter what have you done before or who’ve you worked with, the bottom line is that you better come with that HEAT! In this footage, in the finals, it came down to 2 talented individuals……the young gunner (at that time) that was starting to make his name around the industry circles, producer extraordinaire Swiff D (Pac Div, Jadakiss, Talib Kweli) & of course, the Dilated Junkie himself, our very own Dj Babu. 2 rounds each for the producers to come with the slaps & to be judged by the crowd. Swiff D came with that fire, but Babs was in Battle Mode & also brought the heat! I won’t say who won the LA Finals, but both of them went to USA Finals to represent Los Angeles. I’ll let you guys be the judge.
Btw, if you look closely, you’ll see Dj Revolution, OhNo, Evidence, J.Rocc, Dj Romes, & a somewhat intoxicated Rhettmatic (haaa!). Anyways, watch the video and enjoy the sounds!
What’s up folks….it’s another installment of Throwback Thursdays. In honor of the official Invisibl Skratch Piklzreunion at A-Trak’s Fool’s Good“Day Off” Party at the Shrine Auditorium in LA this Sunday, October 12th, I thought I post up one of the best Dj battles in the history of mankind…..The Xmen vs ISP.
This happened at the first ITF World Championships during the 1996 Rock Steady Crew Anniversary. Babu & myself competed in this battle, but THIS was the hightlight of the event….this was litterarlly the “Clash Of The Titans”. They broke up it into 2 parts, solos & teams. Both catagories were incredible and both crews were going all out with new techinques & routines. I remember watching this battle in person and the energy in the place was crazy!!!
On the Xmen side: Roc Raida (RIP), Rob Swift, Mr. Sinista, Total Eclipse, & Diamond J. For ISP: Q-Bert, Mixmaster Mike, & Shortkut.
This is the team battle…..remember folks, this is 1996……these skills are still relevent in today’s times…..always timeless, always classic! Enjoy!
It’s another installment of Throwback Thursdays Videos. This particular video shows the Funky President himself, J.Rocc is throwin down on 4 Turntables…..yes, I said “4” Turntables! He did this on the Rane TTM68 4 Channel Mixer when Rane Inc debut the mixer at the NAMM Show in 2011. Here, J is paying homage to the old school classic mix records that came out in the 80’s like “Scratch Party”, “Scratch Dance”, “The New York Scratchmasters”, “Mix Trix”, & so forth. Usually those mixes were done “4-track style”, mixing using mulit-tracks. Here, J is demonstrating the mix live with 4 Turntables. The last time someone did something like this was Cut Chemist with his homage to “The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel” using 3 Turntables in the 90’s. And before that, Grandmaster Flash himself using 3 Turntables in the 80’s. Shout out to Mike May at Rane Inc.
Peep the technique below and peep the original mixes that J based his homage to:
Today, Friday September 19, 2014 is the 5 year anniversary of the passing of our brother, TheXecutioners‘ very own, the late great Grandmaster Roc Raida. The Xecutioners, The Invisibl Skratch Piklz, & The Beat Junkies……we all have history together. Even though we are all from different regions across the United States, our 3 crews & a few others were the only ones that were pushing the Dj culture forward while everyone thought that Djing was “played out” during the early 90’s…..
For the Junkies, outside of battling & the competitions, Raida has a special place in our heart because we really bonded with him & the Xmen when we would do shows & tours togethers. Hanging out, cracking jokes, smoking funny cigerettes…..real brotherhood. He was our brother……Shout outs to Tye & the kids. Everyone here misses you Raida…we love you. Grandmaster Roc Raida Forever!!!
For another installment of Throwback Thursdays, I wanted to post a video of mi hermano, the one & only Dj Craze. Straight up, Craze is hands down the best Dj in the World in the history of Battle Dj’s. He’s one of my favorites and is always exciting to watch. Even after his retirement from the Battling scene, he was able to transition into being one of the best Party Rockers out right now and running his own label, Slow Roast. When we Dj’ed together at The Do-Over Portland a few months ago with the other homie Fourcolor Zack, he was joking he should call himself the “Floyd Mayweather Of Djing”….we were all laughing, but deep down I think he was serious…haha! Craze is an excellent Dj as well as an excellent human being…..that’s my hermano right there!
This video footage is from the DMC 1998 World Championships, where he was defending his title the 2nd time. Peep out this footage & this will show you why he was the 5x DMC World Champion…enjoy!
The Dilated Junkie himself, Dj Babu, is featured on new episode of Mass Appeal‘s “Rhythm Roulette” video series.
“On this episode of Rhythm Roulette, we’re joined by 1/3 of Dilated Peoples and member of the World Famous Beat Junkies, DJ Babu. Many don’t know that along with being a highly skilled battle DJ (known for his legendary “Blind Alley” beat juggle), the ITFchampion also gets it in on the production tip. From Super Duck Breaks to The Beat Tapeseries, Babu crafts hip hop shit that knocks, while managing to be progressive at the same time.
We took the Beat Junkie to the Record Jungle outside of Los Angeles to play a game of Rhythm Roulette. After that, we headed back to his studio to put your boy to the test. After listening through all three records, Babu took a joint from The Association’s Stop Your Motor album, threw it on his AKAI MPK49 and got to work.”
Wanted to post something up in honor of the term “Throwback Thursdays”. These particular video footages are from D-Styles‘ “Phantazmagoria”Album Release Party at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood on November 1, 2002.
A couple of things that made this night special: It was the first time that ALL 6 of us (D, Short, J, Babu, Melo, & myself) had performed together as a band, it was the release of D’s first solo album as well as making history as one of the first Scratch Instrumental album (all the music was made by scratches via multi-tracks) of it’s kind, & this event took place 2 days after the death of the legendary Jam Master Jay. As Babs said in the video “We’re performing songs written, produced, & composed by D, from his album ‘Phantazmagoria’…..it’s a real special night for us…it’s a groundbreaking album that D’s putting out….we’re just members of his band.”
Walk down memory lane with us & enjoy the footage……
Here’s footage from the Soulection x Beat Junkies collabo at Soulection’s “The Sounds Of Tomorrow” event that a month ago. This particular footage shows legendary percusionist Eric Bobo of Cypress Hill & our own Rhettmatic aka The Cypress Junkies, going back & forth on the percussion/dj tip.
Bigups to Joe Kay, Andres, SoSuperSam, Kronika, Esta, & the whole Soulection crew for hosting D-Styles, Mr. Choc, Rhettmatic & Bobo at their event.
“Here are highlights from our recent TSOT monthly (L.A.) at The Echoplex w/ special guests Beat Junkies. Legends Eric Bobo and Rhettmatic really brought the energy with the combination of live percussion over Soulection material and forgotten classics.”
Shot by Erik Hurtado / Edited by Eric Coleman & Whest Cornell
What’s up peoples……my first official blog post on the Beat Junkies’ website. I’m planning to do more blog posts that’s either Beat Junkie related, my own projects, or stuff that I’m into…..thank you for everyone that’s been supporting the whole Beat Junkie crew from day one!
So for my first post, HipHopDX world premiere a new music video for a song that I did with the homies from the Brown Bag Allstars, so you know I had to post this up here. It’s called “Louis Vuitton Wallets” and features J57 & Koncept. I sampled “Enemies” from my good friend Adrian Younge. The guys shot the video while they were on tour thru California and spitting vicious rhymes over my production.
We have a new video posted up following our very own Dj Babu during the day of the official release of Dilated Peoples‘ new album “Directors Of Photography”.

In honor of The Word Of Mouth 2014 Reunion Tour, we had to post this video up of Dilated Peoples & Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, courtesy of our good friend Dj Eclipse of Halftime Radio Show/La Coka Nostra fame. This was shot at Fat Beats NYC during the 1st Word Of Mouth tour in 1999.
This is what Dj Eclipse had to say about the clip: “Since Dilated & Jurassic are back on tour together and hitting NYC this weekend I figured I would post this clip from the last time they were on tour together back in 1999. This footage is from a Dilated Peoples in-store at Fat Beats NYC on the day that they were doing their New York stop on the “Word Of Mouth” tour. August 11, 1999. The bill was Dilated Peoples, Jurassic 5, Beat Junkies and me, DJ Eclipse. The venue was Tramps, home to some of the illest shows NYC had seen in the 90s. The interesting thing about this show was that it was the last show Tramps had before it closed down. Some footage from that night to come.”
Tonight (August 3rd, 2014) is the last show of The Word Of Mouth 2014 Tour at the House Of Blues Boston. Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm sharp! Don’t miss this show….it might be a long time that you’ll get to see this whole line-up perform & tour together….don’t sleep!
