This past Sunday, the Funky President was a special guest on Dan Digs‘ “Leftfield Beats” show on Dash Radio.
“This week we welcomed legendary DJ and founder of the Beat Junkies J. Rocc to the studio to take us through the #SixSongScenario, where artists, DJs, and music aficionados tell the story behind their favorite tracks and explain what these songs mean to them.
We talked about finding weird Russian new wave while digging the crates in northern Europe, hearing Dr. Dre spin on seminal LA hip-hop station KDAY back in 1985, how Prince always had the illest beats, flipping a sample until it’s unrecognizable, Pete Rock sending him beat recordings at seven in the morning, and the life and times of J Dilla.”
February is what we like to call “Dilla Month” in honor of the birthday & death anniversary of the one of the greatest (if not THEE greatest) music producer of all time….the one & only James Dewitt Yancey, better known to the world as the legendary J-Dilla. He was born in Detroit on February 7th, 1973 and passed away in Los Angeles on February 10th, 2006 due to complications to Lupus, a few days after his 33rd birthday & the release of his final opus, “Donuts”.
J.Rocc & Rhettmatic both have a special bond with Dilla. J was part of the circle of close friends when Dilla moved to Los Angeles, that included Madlib, Peanut Butter Wolf, & Egon. J.Rocc is also the 3rd member of Jaylib, the collabo group of J-Dilla & Madlib. Rhettmatic eventually also became a part of Dilla’s LA’s circle of friends. Dilla personally asked Rhett to be his tour DJ for his European Tour (which actually turned out to be Dilla’s last tour ever) when J wasn’t available.
Both J & Rhett have done personal tribute mixes to their fallen friend over the years, but haven’t recently done one in a while….till now. This time, they decided to make another Dilla Tribute Mix….together. They basically planned to record an impromptu, inprovised 2×4 (2 person/4 turntables) mix…nothing pre-planned, video archive the live session, see what happens, pick the best part of the mix, & release it to the world to share.
This particular video footage was all recorded in one night with 2 separate GoPro cameras just to document the impromptu recording session between J & Rhett, as they improvise on the spot, weaving in & out of songs with blends & cuts. This is a visual preview of the free mix “Get Live With It”, that will be sharing with the world on February 10th, 2015.
This Audio/Visual Recording is dedicated to the loving memory of James Dewitt Yancey aka Jay Dee aka J-Dilla….We miss you.
The Funky President J.Rocc & Innovative Leisure‘s own Hanni El Khatib drops this mixtape gem called the “Moonlight Mixtape” courtesy of Okayplayer. The first one is J’s “James Brown & Friends” Pt. 2 Mix & the second one is a live James Brown Tribute mix by Rhettmatic when he was on KPFK‘s “Soundwaves Radio”. Enjoy the funky tunes….Merry Christmas from The Beat Junkies.

What’s up folks…..another installment of Mixtape Mondays comin at ya!
In honor of this Friday’s event “Flavors 7” 90’s party at The Echoplex in Los Angeles, brought to you by Footlong Development, I thought it would be appropriate to post up this particular mix of J.Rocc‘s ‘East Coast Flavors’ that is also printed up on a limited edition cassette mixtape (which you can buy at Amoeba’s). On this mix is all the classic 90’s Hip Hop joints that you will be hearing at the party.
“J Rocc rolled though Stones Throw HQ a couple weeks ago and said he had a new beat tape. We threw it on, played it once. Then again. And again. A couple weeks later and it’s out. That’s how easy these things can happen sometimes.
Beats on Tap(e) is a cassette release, with digital download. For now, it’s exclusively at stonesthrow.com. The album is 19 tracks, running 32 minutes. We’re not sure who the guy on the cover is.”
Peep out one of the tracks from J’s beat tape called “Fire Dancer”
In honor of the release of the Axel F’s “Theme Music” album dropping yesterday, J.Rocc & MED decided to drop another video off their album; “Sofa Coins” directed by Rory Gamble. “Theme Music” is out right now!

What’s up folks…..got another flashback video for Throwback Thursdays.
These particular videos were from the Skratchcon 2000 Convention in the Summer of 2000. We (The Beat Junkies) were asked to participate in the first & only conference that was dedicated to the Art & Education of “Skratch Music”. Of course we were honored to be a part of it, but we didn’t know what capacity what we were going to be involved. To tell you the truth, we were really surprised that we didn’t get asked to be part of the “Team/Group Presentation”, but to be part of the “Trick Mixing” section (Babu went on to be part of the ‘Beat Juggle’ section along with Shortkut. D-Styles was part of the Q&A scratch section with Q-Bert, I ended up being a speaker during the Trick Mixing section).
So when it was time for us to present the “Trick Mixing” aspect of the conference, we decided to actually make a statement by doing our own type of branding, since at that time, there were alot of techinques & styles that were coming out & was presented to the public in a formal fashion for the first time. This is when we introduced the “Beat Junkie Style” of mixing to the public (this style of Djing was developed & mastered by J.Rocc). Both J & Melo-D displayed techinques to the crowd of how we would combine battle dj techniques with style & finesse while able to keep the groove going on in a crowd rocking aspect. At that time, I think people looked at us crazy because we would Dj at clubs to rock dance floors while we still participated in the Turntablism scene. Most people were just straight into Battling or just do Skratch Music. For us, this is part of the culture growing up and learning from our predecesors that came before us. On the real peoples, the Beat Junkie Style, or Trick Mixing in general……it’s really, simply, just “Djing” (well, at least to us….lol).
Anyways, enjoy another Throwback Thursdays……enjoy!
This past weekend, the Funky President J.Rocc made his official guest debut on Soulection Radioon Rinse FM with Joe Kay. J drops an all around dope set for the Soulection listeners as well as engaging an interview with the Soulection Head Honcho. Peep out Episode #192 & enjoy!

J breaks down his growing up in the OC & becoming Djing. Speaking of PB Wolf, he makes an appearance on the show. Peep out J’s interview below and the exclusive mix here.
What’s up folks….hope y’all had a good Halloween weekend.
I’m back with another installment of Mixtape Mondays…..we did a press release that we’re going to have our own channel on Dj Skee’s new Dash Radio app that has been already in effect the last 2 months (go to www.dashradio.com to hear what’s going on or you can download the DashRadio app for your IPhone & Android) in November. We won’t announce the official launch of the Beat Junkie Radio Channel unti we are truly ready to launch it….be on the look out.
For the meantime, in honor of our upcoming relaunching of Beat Junkie Radio, here is an old episode from our Ustream show that we used to broadcast from J.Rocc’s crib and sometimes our old Beat Junkies recording studio, back in 2009….this is different from our 1993/94 96.7FM KWIZ show. This particular mix is the audio portion of episode 9. If you want to watch the old episodes, you can go to www.ustream.tv/channel/beat-junkie-radio
It’s a 2 hour mix broken up into 2 parts, with J & myself playing anything we want at that time on some “don’t give a f*ck” steeze. The vibe might remind you on some Friday Night Flavas/Wake Up Show/Stretch & Bobbito Show steelo……enjoy!
We like to wish a big Happy Birthday to the guy who practically started the Beat Junkies. Yes, today is J.Rocc‘s birthday! If it wasn’t for J’s dream to always wanting his own crew & giving us a bunch of “Green Lantern” rings from his old Comic Book job for us to rep, who knows what we would be doing right now, and you wouldn’t be reading this from our website….LOL!!
If you see the Funky President, make sure you wish him a Happy Birthday….and maybe get him some Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups & an Arizona Green Tea. Happy Birthday J!
What’s up folks….I’m back with another installment of “Throwback Thursdays”.
Today’s installment is the official video of J.Rocc‘s single “Stay Fresh”, off his solo debut album “Some Cold Rock Stuf” on Stones Throw Records. This video was shot by Mayer Hawthorne while him, J, & Peanut Butter Wolf were touring Japan (a few months after the 2011 Japan Earthquake & Tsunami). Special cameo by the King Of Diggin, Dj Muro.
The Funky President has been busy in the lab cooking up some goodies. Stay tuned for the Axel F album with M.E.D. in November as well as a special Beat Tape coming out on Stones Throw at the end of the year…..

Yes, another installment of “Mixtape Mondays”. Today’s feature is an old classic mixtape from the Funky President, J.Rocc. This particular mix is called “4 Track Chaos” in which this mix is reminsce of Dr. Dre‘s legendary Roadium Swap Meet Mixtapes. It’s called 4-Track Chaos for a reason because he did this on a Tascam Cassette Recorder and did a multi-track intro. And yes, the mix came out on a Cassette!!! Enjoy!
It’s another installment of Throwback Thursdays Videos. This particular video shows the Funky President himself, J.Rocc is throwin down on 4 Turntables…..yes, I said “4” Turntables! He did this on the Rane TTM68 4 Channel Mixer when Rane Inc debut the mixer at the NAMM Show in 2011. Here, J is paying homage to the old school classic mix records that came out in the 80’s like “Scratch Party”, “Scratch Dance”, “The New York Scratchmasters”, “Mix Trix”, & so forth. Usually those mixes were done “4-track style”, mixing using mulit-tracks. Here, J is demonstrating the mix live with 4 Turntables. The last time someone did something like this was Cut Chemist with his homage to “The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel” using 3 Turntables in the 90’s. And before that, Grandmaster Flash himself using 3 Turntables in the 80’s. Shout out to Mike May at Rane Inc.
Peep the technique below and peep the original mixes that J based his homage to:
Wanted to post something up in honor of the term “Throwback Thursdays”. These particular video footages are from D-Styles‘ “Phantazmagoria”Album Release Party at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood on November 1, 2002.
A couple of things that made this night special: It was the first time that ALL 6 of us (D, Short, J, Babu, Melo, & myself) had performed together as a band, it was the release of D’s first solo album as well as making history as one of the first Scratch Instrumental album (all the music was made by scratches via multi-tracks) of it’s kind, & this event took place 2 days after the death of the legendary Jam Master Jay. As Babs said in the video “We’re performing songs written, produced, & composed by D, from his album ‘Phantazmagoria’…..it’s a real special night for us…it’s a groundbreaking album that D’s putting out….we’re just members of his band.”
Walk down memory lane with us & enjoy the footage……
In honor of The Word Of Mouth 2014 Reunion Tour, we had to post this video up of Dilated Peoples & Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, courtesy of our good friend Dj Eclipse of Halftime Radio Show/La Coka Nostra fame. This was shot at Fat Beats NYC during the 1st Word Of Mouth tour in 1999.
This is what Dj Eclipse had to say about the clip: “Since Dilated & Jurassic are back on tour together and hitting NYC this weekend I figured I would post this clip from the last time they were on tour together back in 1999. This footage is from a Dilated Peoples in-store at Fat Beats NYC on the day that they were doing their New York stop on the “Word Of Mouth” tour. August 11, 1999. The bill was Dilated Peoples, Jurassic 5, Beat Junkies and me, DJ Eclipse. The venue was Tramps, home to some of the illest shows NYC had seen in the 90s. The interesting thing about this show was that it was the last show Tramps had before it closed down. Some footage from that night to come.”

You may have noticed in recent months that we’ve been very active on social media with our videos and merchandise. We’ve been working hard behind the scenes for quite some time….we know that you’re curious to see what the Beat Junkies have been up to. Well folks, here it is……..
We’d like to welcome you to our newly designed, revamped website. It took us awhile to restructure, as we’ve been working very diligently for well over year to get everything ready. As you can see, we are back with a sleek new design along with several new additions to the site….but for the most part it’s business as usual, Beat Junkie Style!
One of the new features here at beatjunkies.com that we are proud to share is the Beat Junkies Digital Record Pool. Yes. The Beat Junkies started an mp3 record pool, personally curated by us for the DJ community and music enthusiasts alike. Collectively, we decided to combine our experience as DJs and tastemakers to provide a quality music service for DJs apart from existing record pools in the industry. As avid record collectors, we are definitely looking to fill in the gaps and share some of our most prized vinyl records with the public – custom edited in a DJ friendly format exclusively for you! Our digital record pool is a monthly subscription service, and was carefully designed for Professional DJ’s looking to expand their collection and deliver quality multi-genre DJ sets.

We’d like to extend our thanks to our contributors, web design, and our web development teams for their creative effort and dedication to producing a quality website on behalf of the Beat Junkies. And of course, a very extra special thanks to you, our loyal friends and followers for your continued love and support. We encourage you to browse through our site at your discretion, and as always, your feedback is appreciated!
